Varicose veins are swollen and/or stretched veins which protrude in a rope-like
manner from the skin. Normal veins, by virtue of one-way valves, channel blood
through the body. When a valve becomes defective, it allows blood flow to leak
down and collect, resulting in congestion and dilation of the vein. This
condition is known as Venous Insufficiency or Venous Reflux Disease is the cause
of Varicose Veins.
VenaCure and VNUS treatments are minimally invasive alternatives to vein stripping and can be done in the comfort of our office. An ultrasound will determine whether you would benefit most from VenaCure (laser technology) or from VNUS (RF-radiofrequency technology). Neither technique requires incisions; instead, a small catheter is inserted
through tiny needle punctures into the leg. The heat source (laser or RF-radiofrequency)
is directed through the catheter to seal off damaged vein walls, causing the
collagen within them to shrink and close the compromised vein. Your body then
automatically reroutes blood to healthy veins. Either procedure takes less than
2 hours and is performed using a local anesthetic. VenaCure and VNUS both
offer excellent outcomes and leave little to no swelling or scarring.
Surgical treatment of varicose veins minimizes the risk of further health issues
while allowing you to return to your full, active lifestyle. Additionally, these
procedures provide immediate relief from the discomfort of unsightly, bulging
veins and are frequently covered by health insurance companies.

Spider veins or broken capillaries (properly named telangiectasia) are small red, blue, or purple web-like or linear veins on the surface of the skin. They are typically less than 2 mm in diameter, and can be flat or raised.
While Spider Veins do not pose health risks like varicose veins, they can contribute to self-consciousness and interfere with your participation in outdoor activities. More attractive legs are just a step away: Dr. Richards is an expert in both Sclerotherapy and Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy has been used effectively for over a century to treat spider veins. It involves the injection of a solution into the affected vein, irritating the vessel lining. This causes it to swell and coagulate. The blood then naturally reroutes itself to other veins. Eventually, the vessel becomes scar tissue and fades from view.
Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy represents the latest advance in such
treatment. It utilizes a “detergent” sclerosant (such as sodium tetradecyl
sulphate) mixed with air, creating ‘foam’, that is injected into the affected
vein. The dispersion of the foam is then tracked by ultrasound. This allows
larger spider veins and varicosities to be treated.![]()

Millions of men and women suffer
from thread veins, manifest by unsightly little clusters of red, blue or
purplish veins that spider web the cheeks, thighs, calves, ankles and knees. In
fact, for Western populations like the US, it's been estimated that 25-30% of
women and 10-20% of men suffer from this unsightly condition. But now there's a
thread of hope – Veinwave™, a new, FDA listed device for eliminating thread
veins, telangiectasia, psoriasis and rosacea.
Designed primarily for vascular surgeons and dermatologists, Veinwave uses a
revolutionary process called 'thermo-coagulation.' As tiny, extremely high
frequency microwaves are applied to the affected skin, the inflamed thread
vessels are heated. When this happens, veins do a disappearing act. Essentially,
the procedure causes the sides of the blood vessel to stick together, preventing
the blood flow causing the dilated veins to be visible, and results in the
instant disappearance of the veins.
Until now, micro-sclerotherapy and lasers have been the most popular procedures
for removing these veins. Unlike lasers, the Veinwave procedure isn't painful,
doesn't carry a risk of long-term scarring and is over in about 15 minutes. How
is this possible? Veinwave's ultra-fine, insulated needle makes for a highly
targeted treatment that doesn't irritate the surrounding skin tissue. That means
there are no bandages or recovery time. Within 15 minutes after a Veinwave
session, patients can resume their everyday activities as if it never happened.
As for micro-sclerotherapy, it works pretty well on the larger varicose leg
veins, but it's not too effective on the fine, thin veins of delicate facial,
knee and ankle areas. But when paired with Veinwave, micro-sclerotherapy works
perfectly.
The Veinwave system is more accurate than laser treatment and does not cause the
pain some experience with laser treatments. Veins treated with the system do not
return. The treatment does not require bandages, and patients can resume their
everyday activity immediately after treatment.
The Consultation Process
A consultation is necessary before
treatment to determine how many treatments are required. Therapies are available
for leg, facial and nose veins as well as facial redness and blemishes.
Your initial consultation will consist of an evaluation of your medical history,
a clinical examination, and a full visual assessment of your condition using our
polarized light facility.
Instantly, you will be able to see the benefits of this procedure on our
monitors. We will then discuss the nature of any proposed treatment in detail,
including the actual procedure, recovery times and expected results. In the case
of minor veins and blemishes, some patients wish to have their treatment ‘on the
same day’ and where this is medically acceptable, we are happy to accommodate
you. In more difficult cases you may wish to consider your decision before
proceeding. You may also require a second consultation.

Common Questions:
What is Veinwave?
Veinwave is a new procedure which uses microwave energy delivered through a fine
needle to safely and effectively treat spider veins anywhere on the body. The
procedure was developed by vascular surgeons as a way to treat very tiny veins
that cannot be treated with sclerotherapy – which can involve risks of burning
and scarring when treated with lasers. Veinwave can also be used to treat veins
in difficult-to-treat locations, including the face, ankles, and knees. The
treatment relies on thermocoagulation to heat and close vessels instantly, in a
procedure that takes less than 15 minutes to perform and involves no downtime.
Who is a candidate for
Veinwave?
Any adult man or woman in good general health who has thin spider veins, or
tangled, thread-like veins known as “telangiectasia,” and who is looking for a
quick procedure with no downtime, can be an excellent candidate for the Veinwave
procedure.
What areas does Veinwave
improve?
Veinwave is ideally suited to treat spider veins wherever they may occur, even
in delicate areas where other treatments may not be suitable. Areas that can be
treated include:
Legs
Arms
Ankles
Knees
Face
Who is not a candidate for
Veinwave?
Veinwave is not recommended for the following individuals:
Those who are
epileptic
Individuals with
bleeding disorders
Men and women
with pacemakers
Pregnant women
How is the procedure performed?
After cleaning the injection site, your specialist will insert a very fine,
insulated needle into the spider vein to be treated. Microwave energy will be
distributed through the needle, destroying the tiny vessels and causing them to
disappear. Most procedures take between 10 and 15 minutes to perform, and no
bandages are required following the procedure. A single injection can treat up
to 18-20 inches of vessels.
Is the procedure
painful?
Because the Veinwave procedure uses a very, very fine needle, there is virtually
no pain associated with the procedure.
What is the recovery
like?
There is no downtime associated with the Veinwave procedure. Men and women
treated with Veinwave can resume their normal activities immediately after their
procedure. In addition, no bandages are required.
When will I begin to see
results?
With the Veinwave system, you will see results immediately following your
treatment, as tiny veins close and begin to disappear. Results will continue to
improve over the next few days following your procedure.
What will the long-term
results be like?
Treatment of spider veins with the Veinwave system is permanent: once your veins
are treated successfully with the Veinwave system, you will no longer be
bothered by them.
What are the risks?
There is a very small risk of scarring, although this risk is minimal and much
less than the risk associated with other vein procedures.
How many sessions are
needed?
While many men and women are successfully treated with only one treatment,
others may require two or three treatments to achieve optimal results.
When can one return to
work after Veinwave?
Most men and women return to work and other normal activities immediately after
their procedure.
What are the advantages
of Veinwave over other procedures?
Veinwave offers many advantages over other procedures used to treat spider veins
and telangiectasia, including:
Less pain
No bruising
No downtime
Ability to treat
areas like knees, ankles and face
High degree of
safety
In addition, the Veinwave procedure
is also faster than comparable treatments.
Is the Veinwave
procedure approved for use in the United States?
Yes. Veinwave has been used for years in Europe, and recently received approval
by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States.
Is the Veinwave
procedure covered by insurance companies?
Most insurance companies consider spider vein treatments to be cosmetic and do
not offer coverage. In some cases, however, spider vein procedures may be
covered, especially when they occur with more problematic varicose veins. To
determine whether or not your procedure will be covered, be sure to contact your
insurance company directly.
